USB Flash Drive

usb flash drive or any other flash memory drive is basically an EEPROM that means Electrically Erasable programmable Read only Memory.

usb flash memory sticks are nothing but an assembly of EEPROM, a controller with a RISC microprocessor, RAM and ROM. All of this interacts with a computer using a usb controller and connector.

Because usb sticks are EEPROM, these can hold data for as long as 10 years. As these memory modules are shock proof and dont have a volatile memory, they are good enough to sustain shock and humidity. To some extent, they often undergo casual abuse that include being ran through a washing machine, or even dropped into coffee.

UBS thumb drives normally dont require drivers. But with few old operating systems like Windows 98 and Windows 95, you need drivers that are provided by the manufacturer. latest OS consider usb drives as usb Mass storage devices and have built in support for these drive. This means that you dont need any drivers, you just plug in the drive and start using it.

Some linux versions might recognize it but wont let you use it until you manually mount the drive. To mount the drive manually, use the command:

mount vfat (drive to mount) (directory to mount at)

For eg. mount -vfat /dev/sda1/mnt/usbdrive

Manufacturers are also coming up with systems that have bios support for USB. This means that you can boot from the small usb drive. There are different versions of operating systems coming up that can be installed on a rom and are so small to fit a usb drive as well. Most of these OS versions are linux based, for example Damm Small linux.

usb drives are mainly used to carry personnel data. But you need to be very careful with your personnel data nowadays. You can have anything in your personnel data collection that you have forgotten, for example your bank account details or anything. try using some encryption engine to secure your data. You can use encrypted file system over the usb drive. But by doing so, you will only be able to access your drive at few computers and not every single computer. Alternatively, you can have a encryption application that can run without installation from your usb. The best would be to use biometric usb drives.

Thanks for the Memories Coach Alvarez

As someone who never cared much about college football growing up, when barry Alvarez was hired to coach my state's largest (only) division I football program in 1990, I was only mildly interested. After 116 victories, and 3 Rose bowl victories, I am now a convert: I love Badgers football!

As of yesterday, things will be different at UW-Madison: head coach barry Alvarez coached his las college football game at camp Randall stadium. Sure there is 1 more game, at hawaii, and 1 more bowl game to play and win. And yes, coach Alvarez is thankfully staying on as athletic director to help recruit and run our programs to ensure we stay top notch in all we do, but things will be different, that's for sure.

I just wanted to say thanks for being such a great leader, coach Alvarez. You innovated your way into my heart with a new brand of college football, and you made your way into the hearts of so many others in the state of Wisconsin. Thanks for bringing respectability back to 'Sconsin Football! It's been a great ride, what with a Heisman trophy winner (Ron Dayne), 3 Rose bowl victories, and a beautifully remodeled camp Randall to watch the games at. I went to camp Randall this year to watch the Badgers defeat michigan, and the place was electric!

Thanks for all of that, and so much more coach Alvarez! Making it great never looked so easy as when you coached, so thanks for inspiring so many Wisconsin kids to believe that our little state college is so much more than just a place to learn!

now let's go win at hawaii and win your last bowl game! On Wisconsin!

When Wireless Broadband Meets VoIP

For a long time, wireless cell phones using broadband were the only solution to communicating on the go. but a few years ago, people developed a new way to communicate with their phones and its called VoIP, or voice over internet protocol. Many people may have already heard of Vonage, the company that pioneered the use of VoIP, but these same people may not know what it is and how it works. people also might be wondering why its a lot cheaper than traditional wireless plans.

VoIP is a new revolutionary way to make phone calls, sometimes for free. This new technology allows you to make phone calls through your computer and an internet connection. It uses IP addresses to connect you to whoever youre trying to call. but voIP isnt limited to just computer to computer phone calls. It can also make calls when someone is in reach of any wi-fi hotspot. All you need is a IP phone and a power supply. Of course, with every new technology, there will be up-sides and down-sides.

When you subscribe to a service like Vonage, they will only charge you around thirty dollars a month while other cell phone companies will charge around fifty. If you download VoIP software off the internet and use it to make long distance calls, it will cost you nothing in most cases and it takes around five minutes to set it up. now, companies are developing ways to allow people to use voIP on popular smart phones such as the motorola Q and the Samsung Blackjack. The reason its so cheap is that voIP costs about a two thirds less than wireless to maintain. Placing a call using VoIP will only cost a company like Vonage one third of the cost that cingular or T-mobile has to pay. And now that people know how to convert wireless phones to IP phones using motorola Q accessories or Samsung Blackjack accessories, cell phone companies are starting to lose business to VoIP providers, but new technology always has certain important disadvantages.

For example, when you do not have a WI-FI signal, the phone will have no dial tone. Also, emergency calls to 911 will be a problem as well. These IP calls are untraceable so if you are unable to tell the 911 operator where you are, they wont be able to find you.

VoIP wont be a large threat to wireless companies for a decade or two because of these problems. They are not small either and it will take companies like cingular more than a decade to switch to this cheaper technology. Stay with your expensive wireless company for now.
